Distribución y hábitat
Gamochaeta axillaris is endemic to central and southern Chile (Freire et al., 2016) in the Subantarctic and Andean-Patagonian do minions (Cabrera & Willink, 1973).

Perennial herbs, up to 20–25 cm tall, stem usually solitary, erect, short-branched from near base to upper part, whitish-tomentose. Leaves concolorous to slightly discolorous, whitish-tomentose on both surfaces; tri chomes long, eglandular, eseptate, filiform from base to tip; basal leaves 25–35 × 5–7 mm, broadly obovate, attenuate at base, apex obtuse, mucronate, usually withered at flowering; cauline leaves 18–35 × 2–4 mm, obovate to linear-obovate, gradually diminishing in size upward. Capitula many, in spiciform clusters on short branchlets in axils of leaves, forming leafy, discontinu ous, elongated spikes. Involucre narrowly campanulate, ca. 4 × 3 mm. Phyllaries 3- or 4-seriate, lamina light brown at apex; outer phyllaries 2.5–3 × ca. 1.2 mm, ovate, apex acute, basally lanuginose; inner phyllaries 3.5–4 × 0.4–0.5 mm, oblong, apex subobtuse, gla- brous. Pistillate florets 52 to 63, corolla 2.2–2.4 mm. Bisexual florets 3 to 4, corolla ca. 2.5 mm, 5-lobed, anthers 5. Achenes 0.5 mm, pilose, with short, globose duplex trichomes. Pappus bristles 2.3–2.5 mm.

Recognition. The cluster analysis (Fig. 3A) shows that Gamochaeta axillaris is grouped with G. spici formis. Both species have concolorous to slightly dis colorous leaves. Gamochaeta axillaris clearly differs by its solitary stems (vs. multi-stemmed), obovate to linear-obovate cauline leaves (vs. broadly obovate), and capitula arranged in discontinuous, elongated spikes (vs. in terminal, headlike clusters).
