Distribución

Distribución y hábitat

Lippia hassleriana is endemic to Paraguay (Fig. 10B, black circles), where it grows in open fields in the eastern region of the country, in the Cerrado and Alto Paraná Atlantic Forest ecoregions. Only 16 collections of Lippia hassleriana are known, 15 of which were made between 1898 and 1991, with the remaining collection made in 2007. Lippia hassle riana has a limited area of occupancy (AOO) of 52 km2, thus qualifying for the Endangered (EN) category; nevertheless, it is worth mentioning that this estimate is based on historical collections, and the absence of recent collections is extremely important in informing a conservation recommendation. The extent of occur rence (EOO) is 48,041 km2 based on eight localities (one each for the Alto Paraná, Caaguazú, Caazapá, Canindeyú, Concepción, and San Pedro departments, and two for Amambay), which fall within the categories of Least Concern (LC) and Vulnerable (VU) for each subcriterion, respectively.

Notas y observaciones

Phenology. Lippia hassleriana flowers and fruits from November to March. Taxonomic notes. Lippia hassleriana is character ized by its terminal spikes, muricate stems, and later ally winged calyces. It resembles L. sclerophylla; both belong to the Dipterocalyx clade (O’Leary et al., 2023b) and both have terminal spikes, laterally winged calyces, and coriaceous leaves. However, L. hassleriana has muricate and glabrous to sparsely strigose stems, lon ger floral bracts (3–8 mm), and generally verticillate ternate leaves, while L. sclerophylla has unarmed and hirsute stems, shorter floral bracts (2–4 mm), and gen erally opposite leaves.
