Monoecious subshrubs up to 2 m tall; stems erect, unarmed, puberulous with pedicellate glandular tri chomes; internodes 1–5 cm. Leaves opposite decus sate, sometimes verticillate, 3 per node, patent, sub sessile, petioles 0.3–0.5 cm; blade broadly elliptic, 2–3(7) × 1.5–5 cm, apex acute, base rounded, margin entirely serrate, sometimes serrate only toward apex, plane, sparsely strigose adaxially and puberulous with sessile glandular trichomes abaxially, coriaceous, some times chartaceous, concolorous, venation pinnate. In florescences bracteose and/or frondose; flowers arranged in spikes developed from lateral brachyblasts, some times 2 per bract axil, cylindrical, 1–4.5 cm, pedun cles 1–1.3 cm, strigose; floral bracts opposite, narrowly elliptic, apex acute, sparsely strigose with pedicellate glandular trichomes, green, 0.5–1.4 cm, basal and api cal bracts free; calyx tubular, 2–3 mm, margin cleft, turning bifid at maturity, densely hirsute with sessile glandular trichomes, accrescent in fruit; corolla lilac, pink, rarely white, 8–15 mm, sparsely strigose. Fruit rounded, ca. 2 mm diam., splitting into 2 light brown cluses, enclosed by accrescent calyx.
