Dioecious subshrubs up to 0.6 m tall, with woody xy- lopodium; stems erect, strigose, unarmed; internodes 2.5–8 cm. Leaves opposite, patent, sessile; blade nar- rowly elliptic to lanceolate, 2.5–5(6) × 0.1–1 cm, apex acute, base cuneate, margin entire, sometimes slightly serrate toward leaf apex, plane, strigose-scabrous adax- ially, strigose abaxially, sometimes glabrescent, con- colorous, chartaceous, venation acrodromous. Inflores- cences frondose; flowers arranged in lateral spikes, solitary, capituliform, ca. 1 cm diam., globose in fruit, up to 1.3 cm, peduncles 3–12 cm, strigose. Staminate flowers with floral bracts whorled, elliptic to broadly elliptic, apex acute, strigose, green, 2–3 mm, basal and apical bracts free; calyx reduced, ca. 0.5 mm, margin truncate, puberulous; corolla yellow, 3–4 mm, sparsely strigose; pistillode present. Pistillate flowers with floral bracts whorled, elliptic to broadly elliptic, apex acum- inate, strigose, green, 2–3.5 mm, basal and apical bracts free; calyx tubular, ca. 2 mm, margin bifid, sericeous, accrescent in fruit; corolla yellow, 2.5–3 mm, sparsely strigose; staminodes present. Fruit rounded, ca. 2 mm diam., splitting into 2 dark brown cluses, enclosed by accrescent calyx.
